Elementary Curriculum
At the Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy Elementary School, a balanced literacy approach is used for reading instruction. Students are instructed using the Open Court Reading program where a strong foundation in phonemic awareness and phonics is emphasized in the lower grades. Through the years, the emphasis transitions over to reading comprehension skill. Additionally, teachers implement a guided reading session where each child is given literacy instruction that meets their specific needs. Teacher read alouds and DEAR time complete the literacy day.
For math, students in grades Kindergarten-3rd grade are instructed using the Saxon Math program and 4th and 5th graders use Envisions by Scott Foresman. With the ultimate goal of having each student take Calculus before graduating from high school, all Kindergarten-2nd grade math instruction is currently accelerated one grade level ahead. Eventually, all kindergarten-5th grade students will be taking accelerated math courses.
For writing, students are instructed using the Write Tools approach. Students are also instructed in science and social studies on a daily basis.
Every student is also instructed using the Zaner-Bloser handwriting curriculum.
