Middle School Curriculum
The basic requirements for Middle School students include Core Courses, as well as Exploratory and Elective courses. Required Core Courses include the following:
- Math (Blocked for two (2) class periods)
- English & Reading (Blocked for two (2) class periods)
- Science
- Social Studies
- Spanish & Physical Education (Semester Courses)
- Elective & Exploratory Courses include:
- Music, African Drumming & Art for Grades 6-8
- Journalism and Dance Fitness (Grade 8 only)
During the Pre-Registration process March 22-26 (grades 6 & 7) and April 5-9 (grade 5), parents will have the opportunity to view the recommended English, reading and math courses, which are selected for students by teachers. Elective courses will be selected by students. This process will allow teachers and parents to assist students with their progression, while being successful in their education.
Promotion Requirements
To be promoted to the 7th or 8th grade, a student must pass one semester of English or reading and one semester of mathematics during the 6th grade. To be promoted to the 9th grade, a student must pass three semesters of English/reading and three semesters of math during the 7th and 8th grades.
Accelerated Curriculum
While most students are enrolled in the regular educational program, some students may be recommended for coursesspecifically geared towards highly motivated students. A differentiated accelerated curriculum includes a wider range and greater depth of subject matter than that of the regular course. Emphasis will be placed on higher level and critical thinking skills; creative, productive thinking and on independent guided research. In the Middle School program, the accelerated curriculum is offered in English and mathematics courses. Students must be recommended by their previous grade instructors and must meet the criteria for these accelerated courses.
